Before planning your next trip, make sure you are up-to-date with the newest COVID-19 rules and regulations. Restrictions will change when flying internationally and vary based on destination. Please visit the local Government’s website for more up-to-date quarantine, testing, and masking requirements.
The United States/Canada border will remain closed until at least July 21st for ground travel. If you would like your vehicle while residing in your summer home or on vacation, chartering to your destination and shipping your car across the border is a great option.
Regulations and recommendations are based on the vaccination status of the traveller. You are considered fully vaccinated:
You do not need to get tested or self-quarantine if you are fully vaccinated or have recovered from COVID-19 in the past 3 months. If you are not vaccinated, it is recommended, but not required, that you get tested 1-3 days before travel and again 3-5 days after travel. The government also recommends that you self-quarantine for 7 days after flying. All states follow this list of recommendations except Hawaii.
Hawaii is the only state requiring mandatory negative COVID-19 results to bypass a 14-day quarantine. Hawaii requires proof of a negative COVID test 72 hours before arrival. Travelers must have their negative test results before leaving for the islands. If you are flying between the islands of Hawaii, there are no longer testing or quarantine requirements for inter-county travel.
Once the state of Hawaii reaches 60 percent of the population fully vaccinated, domestic travelers who were vaccinated in the United States will be able to visit without needing to test in advance or quarantine after they arrive. Currently, Hawaii is 50% vaccinated.
There are no federal travel requirements, but there may be provincial or territorial rules and restrictions. Some provinces do require a 14-day self-isolation for domestic travellers, although you may be exempt if you are fully vaccinated. Please visit Keep Exploring Canada for an updated list of each province’s requirements or you can visit the province or territory website of your final destination.
The United States does not restrict air travel from Canada. Canadian air passengers can still enter the country as long as they haven’t visited Brazil, China, Iran, Ireland, the U.K. or countries in the Schengen Area for 14 days prior.
The Canadian Government has extended the temporary travel restrictions on non-essential international travel into Canada. Only Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and individuals with specific circumstances may enter Canada for the time being. This restriction is expected to be lifted by the end of July. For more information please visit the Government of Canada’s website.
If flying between the United States and Canada, you are required to have a COVID test conducted no more than 3 days before your flight departs regardless of your vaccination status. Here at Genesis, we offer on-site testing prior to flights, for your convenience, if required or requested.
Beginning July 5, 2021, fully vaccinated travellers allowed to enter Canada are able to skip the 14-day quarantine requirement, including the mandated hotel stay. Instead, you must show proof of vaccination and present results of a negative pre-departure COVID-19 test. You must take another test upon arrival, and self-isolate until that test comes back negative. Additionally, you must have a suitable quarantine plan in case it is determined at the border that you do not meet all of the conditions required to be exempt from quarantine.
Mexico allows US travelers by air. There’s no need for a negative PCR test for Covid-19, and no quarantine required. Most resorts, however, ask guests to fill out health questionnaires.
